NEW POLL: CATHERINE BLAKESPEAR OPENS UP WIDE LEAD AGAINST DEMOCRATIC RIVAL, SHOWS SLIGHT EDGE OVER REPUBLICAN
Blakespear leads Democrat Joe Kerr 21% – 11% before any information about the candidates, leads 34% – 14% after voters given short positive descriptions
Encinitas, California — Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear released an internal poll Wednesday that showed her trouncing her Democratic opponent among likely June Primary voters. According to the poll conducted by the widely respected, California-based firm FM3 & Associates, Blakespear leads 21% – 11% over her Democratic opponent former firefighter Joe Kerr (D – unincorporated Orange County). That lead climbs to 34% – 14% after voters were read short, equally positive descriptions of each candidate. The lone Republican in the race, Orange County car dealer Matt Gunderson, received 36% and 40% before and after the informed vote, respectively.
After voters receive a positive biographical paragraph about Mayor Blakespear and each of the other two candidates, Democrats overwhelmingly choose Blakespear over her Democratic challenger. The poll confirms what many long suspected — that Blakespear and Gunderson will easily advance to the November runoff. Further, the poll shows that the combined Democratic vote outpaces the Republican vote, laying the groundwork for a Democratic win in November.
Katie Merrill, general consultant for Blakespear’s campaign, said of the poll results, “Blakespear’s record speaks for itself, and that’s exactly why Democratic Primary voters gravitate towards her over a relatively unknown Orange County-based Democratic challenger who lacks a strong record of accomplishment. From ensuring 100% renewable energy for residents to expanding affordable housing opportunities and overseeing a $2 billion trolley line that was completed on time and under budget, nobody can go toe-to-toe with Blakespear on delivering real results for families.”
FM3 & Associates recently completed 400 online and telephone interviews with likely June 2022 voters in California’s 38th State Senate District between March 22nd and April 3rd. The poll has a 4.9% margin of error. The entire polling memo can be found here.
Blakespear is a fourth-generation Encinitan whose great-grandparents put roots down in the area nearly 100 years ago. She has been the Mayor of the City of Encintas for over five years, and an attorney for 15 years. In addition to leading her city as mayor, she serves as the Chair of SANDAG, the county’s powerful transportation agency, and as a board member on the San Diego County’s Airport Authority. She and her husband have two teenage children.
The newly-drawn 38th Senate District includes the communities of Pacific Beach, La Jolla, Carmel Valley, Pacific Highlands Ranch, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Rancho Santa Fe, Fairbanks Ranch, Encinitas, Elfin Forest, Carlsbad, Vista, Oceanside, Camp Pendleton, Rancho Mission Viejo, Ladera Ranch, San Juan Capistrano, Coto De Caza, Rancho Santa Margarita, Mission Viejo, and Laguna Hills.
