Catherine Blakespear Outraises Both Opponents Combined for State Senate Bid in First Reporting Period of 2022

Blakespear’s $203k haul swells campaign total to $583k

Encinitas, California — On Thursday, Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear, the Democratic Party’s endorsed candidate in the race for Senate District 38, and two competitors reported their financial contributions for the period covering the beginning of the year through April 23. Blakespear led the pack, bringing in $203,233, while lone Republican and car dealer Matt Gunderson brought in $170,497.Democrat Joe Kerr, who trails the field in available polling, took in $32,650 since jumping into the race in January. While Kerr reported $116,650 in total receipts, $84,000 of it was money raised in 2021 for a failed Orange County Supervisorial campaign, which he transferred to his Senate campaign account.

Both of Blakespear’s opponents combined raised $203,147, just slightly less than Blakespear’s total.

Blakespear’s $583,414 running total is followed by Gunderson with $472,175, and Kerr’s $146,349 (including cash he raised for his unsuccessful Supervisor campaign). Blakespear also leads cash-on-hand with $381,201. Gunderson reported having $349,757 on hand, while Kerr had $57,617.

Blakespear’s total from this reporting period includes more than 350 contributions, more than two-thirds of which were in amounts of $100 or less. More than three out four contributions were from within Senate District 38, and more than half were from new donors.

Blakespear said of her fundraising success, “I’m honored by the number of people from across San Diego and Orange Counties who believe in our campaign. The outpouring of generous support by so many people and organizations throughout California is truly humbling. I know that with their continued support, our campaign will be victorious! We’re ready to hit the ground running in Sacramento, delivering results that families expect and deserve from their lawmakers.”

Blakespear is a fourth-generation Encinitan whose great-grandparents put roots down in the area nearly 100 years ago. She has been the Mayor of the City of Encinitas for five years. She serves as the Chair of SANDAG, the county’s powerful transportation agency, and as a board member on the San Diego County Airport Authority. The newly-drawn 38th Senate District includes the communities of Pacific Beach, La Jolla, Carmel Valley, Pacific Highlands Ranch, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Rancho Santa Fe, Fairbanks Ranch, Encinitas, Elfin Forest, Carlsbad, Vista, Oceanside, Camp Pendleton, Rancho Mission Viejo, Ladera Ranch, San Juan Capistrano, Coto De Caza, Rancho Santa Margarita, Mission Viejo, and Laguna Hills.
