Sheriffs will help with mask handouts and education
The City Council last week voted unanimously to start a three-month pilot program where Sheriff’s deputies will visit crowded public places to educate and pass out free masks. They’ll also remind people that not only are masks required outdoors, but they’ve been proven very effective in stemming the spread of COVID-19.
Deputies will have the power to cite people if necessary, but their emphasis will be on friendly and educational interactions.
Encinitas Deputy Mayor Kellie Hinze and volunteers have been distributing masks at popular beach access points for several weekends now, and she says that most people they’ve contacted have been unaware that masks are mandatory there.
I’ve volunteered with Kellie, and it’s rewarding to help be part of the solution. She’s looking for volunteer help for next weekend’s shifts. If you’re interested, please email her at [email protected].

No-contact door hanger volunteers needed in District 2
For the next few weeks, we’re going to be distributing door hangers to encourage folks to get out the vote for Terra Lawson-Remer, Deputy Mayor Kellie Hinze, and me, starting in District 2, Old Encinitas.
You can sign up for as many four-hour shifts on Tuesdays and Saturdays as you’d like. The idea is to stay safe in this pandemic by dropping off the door hangers without making contact with residents. Thanks to the energy and enthusiasm of Ed McFadd and Steve Bartram for piloting this effort. Please volunteer here!

I’ll leave you with news of a delightful new Encinitas quality-of-life enhancement.
How cool is it to see a full art exhibit under a freeway bridge next to speeding cars, but fully protected by a concrete wall? There’s also a new, large sidewalk where you can stand and view the art.
The installation of these locally designed and produced murals is the final touch in our new safe bike and pedestrian undercrossings at Santa Fe Dr., coming next to Encinitas Blvd. It’s well worth a free field trip!
This mosaic, designed by a team of student artists and a teacher from San Dieguito Academy, includes my two children’s actual footprints and clay flowers made by my son. It symbolizes walking into our community’s Encinitas future, with our path guided by the ocean, flowers and plants.
